Measuring the Performance of Your Health System: Aligning Public Reporting and Performance Analytics

Join the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) and international and Canadian leaders as they explore how comparative health data is used to measure the performance of health care systems, focusing on topics such as access, quality of care, patient safety and emerging health trends. Learn how health care leaders are using data to measure, monitor and improve health system efficiency and safety through public reporting and other means.

This unique and interactive half-day event will be of interest to multiple audiences who share a vested interest in learning how health data is transforming health system performance. These audiences include care providers, decision-support teams and decision-makers in hospitals, health care facilities, regional authorities and provincial-territorial ministries as well as vendors and the IT/IM community. The session will take place on Sunday, May 31, 2015 in downtown Toronto.

Meet Our Speakers - Panel 1:

Brent DIVERTY, Vice-President, Programs, Canadian Institute for Health Information

Brent Diverty is the vice president of Programs at CIHI. He has executive responsibility for CIHI’s range of health services, expenditure and workforce data holdings and many of the standard information products that flow from them. Prior to re-joining CIHI in February 2013, Mr. Diverty spent 2 years at the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare in Canberra, where he provided strategic leadership to the organization as a member of the executive team and programmatic leadership to a diverse portfolio of health and welfare information programs.

Previously, Mr. Diverty worked as a director at CIHI, in management consulting roles and at Statistics Canada. Over his 20-year career, he has worked on both the supply and demand sides of data and information, in most cases with a focus on health services and population health. He holds an MA in economics from McMaster University, with a specialization in health.

Veillard - CIHI

Jeremy VEILLARD, Vice-President, Research and Analysis, CIHI

Jeremy Veillard, PhD, is CIHI’s vice president of Research and Analysis and an assistant professor (status only) at the University of Toronto’s Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation. He is also president of the Canadian Association for Health Services and Policy Research (CAHSPR) for 2013–2014.

Dr. Veillard has expertise in health policy development and health system reform, as well as in evaluation and health system performance measurement, and he has extensive professional experience in the health sector in both Europe and Canada. Dr. Veillard was the regional adviser for health policy and equity at the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe from 2007 to 2010. Dr. Veillard’s previous experience includes leading work on the Health Results Team at the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, serving as a policy advisor at the WHO/EURO in charge of hospital reforms and working as a hospital administrator in France. Dr. Veillard has a PhD in health systems research from the faculty of medicine of the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands) and 2 master’s degrees.

 Levesque - CIHI

Jean-Frédéric LEVESQUE
Chief Executive Officer, Bureau of Health Information, New South Wales

Jean-Frédéric Lévesque, MD, PhD, FRCP(C), is the chief executive officer of the Bureau of Health Information of the state of New South Wales and conjoint professor at the Centre for Primary Health Care and Equity of the University of New South Wales, Australia. He previously acted as scientific director of Analyses and Evaluation of Health Systems at the National Institute of Public Health and as the inaugural deputy commissioner for Performance Appraisal and Analysis at the Health and Welfare Commission in Quebec. In 2011–2012, he was a visiting academic at the University of Melbourne. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada and has a doctorate in public health and a medical degree from the University of Montréal. He is a member of the Strategic Analytic Advisory Committee of the Canadian Institute for Health Information. Dr. Lévesque’s research focuses on hospitals’ and primary care systems’ performance, particularly in terms of how different models of care affect patient outcomes and experiences of care.

 Klazinga - CIHI

Niek KLAZINGA
Professor of Social Medicine at Academic Medical Centre, Netherlands
Coordinator of the Health Care Quality Indicators (HCQI) Project, OECD Health Division, OECD

Niek Klazinga is a medical doctor by training, professor of social medicine at the Academic Medical Centre at the University of Amsterdam since 1999 and has been coordinating the Health Care Quality Indicator work of the OECD in Paris since 2007. Over the past 25 years, Niek has been involved in numerous projects and publications on quality in health care in The Netherlands and abroad. Present engagements include membership of the boards of trustees of a major Dutch teaching hospital and mental health care institute, advisor to the WHO and visiting professor at the Corvinus University in Budapest


 

Meet Our Speakers - Panel 2:

OReilly - CIHI

Steve O'REILLY
Executive Director, Atlantic Canada and Integrated eReporting, CIHI

As Executive Director for Atlantic Canada and Integrated eReporting, Steve O’Reilly is responsible for leading a regional presence that plays an important role in improving CIHI’s knowledge and understanding of the specific health information needs of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. In addition, his portfolio includes leading the Integrated e-Reporting initiative and the Portal Services program, which oversee the implementation of integrated e-reporting for CIHI and its clients.

 With more than 20 years of experience in the health sectors, Mr. O’Reilly has extensive knowledge of health information and health information systems. Prior to joining CIHI, he served as chief executive office of the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Health Information. He did foundational work with the Newfoundland and Labrador Health System Information Task Force and was an early proponent of the electronic health record.

Tom Briggs
Senior Program Officer, Planning and Performance, Alberta Health Services

Tom is currently the Senior Program Officer for Planning and Performance with Alberta Health Services. In his current role he is responsible for supporting the development of the AHS Health and Business Plan; Operational plans for zones and other portfolios; service plans at the program, service and sub-geography as well as supporting the development, monitoring and reporting of AHS performance metrics and related activities.

 Tom Briggs earned his Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology at Northern Illinois University. He completed his masters and undergraduate degree the University of Calgary.  Prior to joining AHS he was a management consultant specializing in the health care sector but also worked extensively in education, social services, labour and workforce, infrastructure and other public sectors. He has extensive experience in program evaluation, research design, organizational development, performance measurement, systems analysis, quality improvement measurement, statistics, econometrics, psychometrics, and information management. He has worked with governments, universities, and the private sector in various capacities over the last 25 years.

 Tom's recent work is focuses on utilizing "big data" and simplifying it for tactical and strategic decision making. This approach is being used to support health service planning across the Province and incorporates population needs assessment, utilization costing and performance information from multiple sources to tell a story about how we might optimize the services we provide as an organization.

 Hutchison - CIHI

Sarah HUTCHISON
Chief Executive Office, OntarioMD

Sarah Hutchison is the Chief Executive Officer of OntarioMD. Sarah has over 25 years of progressive experience within organized medicine, and is known as a leader in Ontario's eHealth environment. She brings an extensive background and knowledge of eHealth, and has been effective in ensuring that physicians are central to the system discussions about the evolution of eHealth in Ontario.

 Sarah has had a successful career with the OMA since 2001. She held progressively senior leadership roles to become the OMA’s Chief Information Officer and Executive Director, Engagement and Program Delivery. She simultaneously held the position of Chief Privacy Officer for OntarioMD, leveraging her extensive experience in privacy and regulatory and governance issues in health care.

 Sarah holds an MHSc (University of Toronto), an LL.M in Health Law (Osgoode), and holds CHE (Canadian College of Health Leaders) and CPHIMS-CA designations.
